Biography

  • One of the greatest scholar of medieval Islam.- He came from an Iranian family and wrote both in Persian and in Arabic.- He served many different leaders as : the Sāmānid sultan Manṣūr II b. Nūh, the prince of Ǧurǧāniyya Abū l-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Maʾmūn, the Ḫārizmšāh Abū l-ʿAbbās Maʾmūn b. Maʾmūn and the Ġaznavwid sultan Maḥmud b. Subuktakīn.- He was responsible for some tricky political missions at the court of Ǧurǧāniyya.- After the murder of the Ḫārizmšāh and the conquest of the country by the Ġaznavwid sultan in 1017, he was brought to the court of Ġazna.- There he was probably the official astrologist.- He went with the sultan in military expeditions in India and there, he taught greek sciences and collected in a book a great amount of datas and knowledges on India.- He wrote a lot
