  • His grandfather is assumed to have been taken captive during the battle of ʿAyn el-Tamr and may have converted to Islam.- His family specialized in the transmission of early ḥadīṯs and aḫbār.- He quickly adquired a scholarly reputation.- Transmitted traditions in Egypt from their proper sources and authorities.- He may have written Sunan but the book is lost.- Antagonisms with two personnalities in Medina who forced him to leave: Hiśam b. ʿUrwa and Mālik b. Anas.- Mālik b. Anas reportedly claimed he was śiʿite and a qadarite.- Disagreement on the transmission of the Prophet's ḥadīṯs and ġazawāt.- Opposing judgements exist on this character
