Écritures contemporaines de l’histoire musulmane
La conférence de l’année 2019‑2020 vise à analyser les processus ayant contribué à promouvoir la discipline historique dans le monde arabe majoritairement musulman et ceux qui, dans un second temps, ont permis de forger des outils visant à remettre en question les fondements de cette discipline, au nom d’un interdit sacré ou d’une exceptionnalité islamique, y compris en Europe et en Amérique.

A number of Sunni scholars promoted rules in order to make Islam into an iconoclastic or iconophobic religion. They attached the word ṣūra (“image”) to a creative gesture and specified that it could only be accomplished by God only. But archeological sources testify that the rule was neither immediate nor implemented severely. The Quran itself illustrates some tension to the extent that, in one verse, some “djinns” are mentioned as the authors of “statues”. It would thus be more relevant to say that this religious tradition is connected with some form of aniconism. In the modern era, these rules have been jeopardized by photography, whether animated or not. From time to time, Sunni jurists have bypassed some proscribed uses and justified the change. The latest example is the film performances of actors who represented people from the close circle of Muhammad’s “Companions”.
