الكتاب عبارة عن متن مختصر في أصول الفقه، لخَّص فيه المؤلف مسائل هذا الفن، فأتى فيه على أبواب الأصول جميعها، ولم يفتْهُ إلاّ اليسير منها. وكان الغرض من تأليف هذا المختصر الأصولي، هو أن يكون مقدّمةً في قواعد الفقه وأصوله للموسوعة الفقهية الضخمة في فروع الفقه المالكي المعروفة بـ "الذخيرة " لذات المؤلف . والحق أن الكتاب لم يكن اختصاراً لكتاب "المحصول" في أصول الفقه للإمام الرازي بالمعنى المعهود للاختصار الذي لا يغادر أصله في صغيرةٍ ولا كبيرة، فالمؤلف نفسه ذكر في أكثر من موضع أن اعتماده في هذا المختصر الأصولي كان على أخذ جملة كتاب: " الإفادة " للقاضي عبد الوهاب، وكتاب " الإشارة " للباجي، و"مقدّمة" ابن القصار في أصول الفقه، وكتاب "المحصول" للرازي. لكن لمّا كثر اعتماد المؤلف في إنشائه للكتاب على تبويب وترتيب "المحصول" ، مع نقل كثير من عباراته - ولو بالمعنى - استحقّ أن يوسم بأنه: تنقيح الفصول في اختصار المحصول.

Summary

This book is a short text on the science of jurisprudential principles, in which the author discussed, in summary, most of the main topics of that science. The book was originally meant to be an introduction for the expanded work on Mālikī jurisprudence for the same author, known as "al-Ḏaḥīra". Unlike what the book's title might imply, the book is not a conventional abridgment of al-Rāzī's book, "al-Maḥṣūl". The author mentions that he builds over the gist of many books, including "al-Ifāda" for the al-qāḍī ʿabd al-Wahāb, "al-Išāra" for al-Bāǧī, "al-Muqaddima" for ibn al-Qaṣṣār, and "al-Maḥṣūl" for al-Rāzī. However, as the author adopted the same structure of al-Rāzī's book, and quoted, or rephrased, many of his sentences; he entitled the book: "tanqīẖ al-uṣūl fī iḥtiṣār al-Maḥṣūl".
