Recueil de fables, inspiré du "Pañcatantra", traduit du sanscrit en moyen perse (VIe s. version perdue), puis en arabe par Ibn al-Muqaffaʿ (VIIIe s.) et devenu un classique. La version arabe a donné naissance aux versions en persan (XIIIe s.), en hébreu (XIIIe s.) et en castillan (version dite "alphonsine", XIIIe s.). A partir de la version en hébreu de Joël, adaptation en latin par Jean de Capoue sous le titre de "Directorium humanae vitae alias Parabolae antiquorum sapientum".
