يعد هذا الكتاب من بين أهم المصادر في معرفة الضعفاء والمتروكين من رواة الحديث الشريف، ومعرفة رواياتهم الضعيفة والتالفة. وقد أورد فيه ابن حبان ضعفاء المحدّثين وأضداد العدول من الماضين ممن أطلق عليهم الأئمة الجَرْح، وصحّ عنده فيهم القدح، مع ذكر السبب الذي من أجله جُرِحَ والعلة التي فيها قُدِحَ.
