كتاب تناول فيه المؤلف سيرة حياة الملك الظاهر ركن الدين بيبرس العلائي البندقداري، أحد سلاطين الدولة المملوكية العظام. ومما ينبغى الإشارة إليه هو أن جزءًا كبيرًا من هذه السيرة قد فُقد ولم يصل إلينا، ولم يتبقى منها إلا هذا الجزء الذي تناول فيه المؤلف حياة السلطان في الفترة الواقعة ما بين سنة 670 ه – 676 ه، ووفاته ما تيسر من أمور دفنه وما وقف عن روحه، وانتهى بلائحة إجمالية لخصال السلطان وإنجازاته وأوصافه الحسنى. وقد قسم ابن شداد مؤلفه إلى عدة فصول بلغت 28 فصلًا، وفي ثنايا فصول هذا الجزء يكون السلطان محور الحادثة التاريخية، فقد رصد تحركاته ونشاطاته المتعددة على الصعيدين الداخلي والخارجي. فعلى الصعيد الداخلي، يخبرنا المؤلف كيف وطد بيبرس دعائم حكمه، وحركته الدائمة متنقلًا بين شطري مملكته، مرة في موكب ظاهر، ومرة على خيل البريد متخفيًا، ليطلع عن كثب على أحوال النواب والولاة، وبذلك ضمن سلامة البلاد واستقرار السلطنة. أما على الصعيد الخارجي، فيسلط المؤلف أضواء كاشفة على سياسة السلطان الخارجية التي تجلت في نشاطه العسكري والدبلوماسي.

Summary

It's a biography for the Great Mamluk Sultan Al-Ẓahir Baybars. Most of the book is lost and only this small part of the book is extant which covers Baybars's biography between the years 670 and 676 H, his death and the rituals of his burial, then listed some of his achievements and good deeds. The author arranged the book into 28 chapters dealing with his internal and external political and economical affairs and telling some stories about how he used to disguise so that he would check on his police and governors and how his people lived.
