هذا الكتاب، وإن كان يعني في صلبه بالحيوانات، إلا أنه حوى ثروة من المعارف اﻷخرى كاﻷمثال واﻷشعار والطب التقليدي وتعبير اﻷحلام والحكايات التاريخية والفوائد الصوفية والتراجم، مما يتيح استخراج كتب عدة مستقلة عنه. فالمؤلف يعرض لحيوان ما فيضبط اسمه لغويا ثم يعرف به وبعد ذلك يذكر حكمه الشرعي من حل وحرمة، ثم يذكر خواصه في التداوي، ويختم بذكر تعبيره في المنام، وبين ثنايا هذا كله نجد استطردات قد تطول مثلما فعل عندما تحدث عن الخلفاء. |
| Summary |
This is a zoological Lexicon, however, it is full of other beneficial sciences, such as: proverbs, poetry, traditional medicine, dreams interpretation, historical stories, Sufi sayings and biographies, therefore,it can be separated into various books. This treatise is arranged alphabetically by the name of the animal, with 1069 entries in total. Each entry would include a linguistic discussion of the origin and meaning of the name, a description of the animal and its habits, any accounts of the animal given in the literature concerned with the Prophetic tradition, a statement as to its appropriateness as food, proverbs relating to the animal, its medicinal and occult magical properties, and its significance when it appears in a dream. Furthermore, it is full of digressions which sometimes can be long, like when speaking about the Caliphs. |

عمل موسوعي في الحيوان مرتب على حروف المعجم، كان الغرض من تأليف العمل هو تصحيح الألفاظ الخاصة بالحيوان ، وبيان الأسماء المبهمة وتفسيرها ، بيد أنه حُشي بالفوائد والنوادر والأخبار والتواريخ والأشعار وغيرها |
